Description

This building is a barn and shippon located approximately 15 metres south-east of Castlehaw Farmhouse. It likely dates from the early to mid 18th century and has been altered over time. The structure is made of mixed random rubble with quoins, and features a roof with green slate on the upper courses and stone slate on the lower courses, both of which are graduated. The barn is arranged in an L-plan, with the main range oriented on a north-south axis and a storeyed shippon wing projecting to the west at the south end.

On the exterior, the main range includes a wagon doorway at the junction with the wing, which has a re-used timber lintel and 19th-century har-hung doors, sheltered by a porch with a rubble side wall and a monopitched roof. To the left of the porch, there is an interrupted course of through-stones near the eaves that extends about half the length of the wall, along with three crudely-shaped breathers. Further left, there is a doorway with a monolith lintel, and adjacent to this is a cart-shed doorway that has a timber lintel protected by a slate course. The south front of the wing, which is on lower ground, features a ground-floor shippon with two doorways and three windows arranged as window-door-window-window-door, all with stone lintels. Additionally, there are small square breathers on three levels above and some random through-stones.

Inside, the main range has stone partition walls dividing the two northern bays, while the remainder of the space forms a single vessel that connects with the upper floor of the wing. Both sections have principal-rafter roof trusses, some of which include re-used timbers. This barn forms a group with Castlehaw Farmhouse to the north-west.
