Description

No. 6 and 7 Settlebeck is a farmhouse that has been converted into a pair of cottages and is now re-integrated as one dwelling. It likely dates from the early 18th century and has been altered over time. The building is constructed of roughly coursed rubble with quoins and features a stone slate roof. It has a single-depth, three-unit plan that is positioned at right angles to the road, facing southeast.

The structure is two storeys high with a symmetrical arrangement of windows, featuring two sets of two windows on each floor. There is a gabled porch at the junction of the two units, with a doorway on the west side. The windows are 6-pane sashes, with three located at the ground floor of No. 6 on the left. The building has gable chimneys, one of which at the east end was formerly corbelled, as well as a ridge chimney. The west gable wall, which is canted in the center, has two sashes without glazing bars on each floor, all of which have stone slate drip-bands. An outhouse is attached to the southeast corner, and the rear wall adjoins the south end of No. 5.

Inside, there are lateral ceiling beams in all three bays, with the third bay being undercut at the rear end for a former staircase. The former housepart in the east bay contains an 18th-century fireplace with a corbelled lintel and a late 19th-century cast-iron range. The interior has otherwise been altered. This building is included as part of a street frontage group with Nos. 4 and 5, and it is also connected to Nos. 1 to 3, which are attached to No. 4.
