Description

A row of three houses located in Settlebeck, probably dating from the late 18th or early 19th century, and subsequently altered. The houses are constructed from roughly coursed rubble with quoins, and have a stone slate roof. They follow a double-depth plan, with each house originally single-fronted; numbers 1 and 2 were built as halls-adjoining. The houses are three storeys high, each with a 1+1+1 window arrangement. Numbers 1 and 2 have coupled doorways, each with a large stone lintel and altered doors. Number 3 has a doorway with a segmental top, constructed with rubble voussoirs, and a matching door. Each house has one square window on each floor, with 6-pane sashes, except for the second-floor window of number 1, which now has a 15-pane top-hung casement. Gable chimneys are present, along with a large lateral chimney at the junction of numbers 2 and 3. The rear elevations contain various rectangular windows, including three fixed windows with glazing bars and one opening pane each. The interior of the houses has not been inspected. The row forms part of a prominent group in the town centre, adjacent to numbers 4 and 5, and also to numbers 6 and 7.
