Description

This barn, located approximately 30 metres north of Spa Farmhouse, is likely from the mid to late 18th century, with some additions from the mid 19th century. It has been altered over time and is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble with quoins, except for the later additions, and features a stone slate roof.

The main structure consists of five bays aligned east-west, with a continuous outshut at the back. The walls have slit-breathers, most of which are blocked. To the front, there is a cartshed added to the left two bays and a stable block added to the right two bays. Between these two additions is a wide pitched roof that includes an integral wooden pigeon loft, creating a porch for a large basket-arched waggon doorway, which features a keystone and double board doors.

The left two-bay addition has a catslide roof, a stable door, and a ventilated window in the first bay, while the second bay is open. The two-storey stable block on the right has a loading door in the re-entrant wall near the main range and an altered doorway and windows on the outer side wall.

At the back, the outshut under a catslide roof has a low segmental-arched waggon doorway in the centre with double board doors, loose boxes at both ends with stable doors, and two-light double-chamfered mullioned windows under the eaves—one window on the right is missing its mullion and the left one is blocked. The interior features pegged kingpost roof trusses with fishbone struts and two pairs of chamfered purlins, with an altered loft at the east end and random rubble partition walls at the rear. This barn forms a group with Spa Farmhouse.
