Description
Lathom House Chapel of St John is a chapel built around 1500 by Thomas Lord Stanley, 2nd Earl of Derby. The chapel is constructed from red sandstone random rubble with large quoins and has scored render on the east side, topped with a stone slate roof. It features a nave and chancel in a single three-bay vessel oriented on a north-south axis. The east side includes a gabled porch at the north end and three segmental-pointed windows with early 19th-century Gothick wooden tracery and stained glass. The north gable is topped with an octagonal bellcote, while the south gable wall displays a large five-light Perpendicular window with a cavetto surround and 19th-century tracery and hoodmould.
Inside, the chapel has a wagon roof with early 19th-century rib-work. The sanctuary screen incorporates parts of an original Perpendicular design believed to have come from Burscough Priory after the Dissolution and was severely damaged during the siege of Lathom House in 1644, with some bullet holes still visible. This screen was restored in 1817 using mahogany and pine. An oak eagle lectern, also from Burscough Priory, is present, along with a low doorway at the north end of the west wall that has been recently exposed. A north gallery supported by two cast-iron quatrefoil columns features a canted centre and houses an organ from 1881 made by Wilkinson of Kendal. In the porch, there is a large oval wooden panel carved with a coat of arms. The chapel forms a group with the Lathom House Almshouses, which are attached to the north gable.
