Description
Cranes Hall is a house that dates from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, featuring various builds and alterations. It has a roughcast render on stone, with some brick, and is topped with stone slate roofs. The building has an irregular triple-pile plan, with a small 17th-century section at the rear and later additions at the front and right.
The house is two storeys high and has a facade with three one-window bays and one three-window bay, indicating successive additions. Originally, the facade was likely symmetrical, but the entrance is now located in the third bay. This entrance features a canted stone porch with three steps leading up to a panelled door with an overlight, topped by a moulded cornice and blocking course. To the left of the entrance, there are two segmental-headed 12-pane unhorned sashed windows with exposed boxes, and on the first floor, there are three similar sashed windows. The fourth and fifth bays are slightly set back, with the fourth bay featuring French windows at ground floor and a 16-pane unhorned sashed window, while the fifth bay has a canted bay and a 12-pane sash window. The house has gable chimneys and two ridge chimneys, along with various back extensions that have altered windows.
Inside, there is a 17th-century chamfered beam in the back range, while the front range has been remodelled and features a 17th-century-style staircase that was installed in the early 20th century. Historically, it is said to have been the house of the estate manager for Lathom, later enlarged and remodelled for the 3rd Earl of Lathom.
