Description

Needless Inn Farmhouse is a farmhouse with an attached garden wall, dating from the early to mid 18th century. It has been enlarged and altered over time. The exterior features pebble-dashed render on handmade brick, with a sandstone plinth and quoins, and a stone slate roof. The building is designed in an L-plan, consisting of a single-depth, two-unit main range with a projecting porch and an added kitchen wing at the rear.

The farmhouse is two storeys high with attics, displaying a symmetrical arrangement of windows: one tall window in the centre and one on each side, with a total of three windows on each floor. The two-storey gabled porch is offset to the right of centre and includes quoins, a round-headed outer doorway, and a small two-light casement window on the first floor. The other windows are low segmental-headed three-light casements with altered glazing. Both gable walls feature extruded chimney stacks with diagonal shafts and small attic windows. The rear wing has three-light casement windows with glazing bars and raised punch-dressed sills, a board door near the junction, and a gable chimney.

Inside, the main range has the housepart located in the second bay, with a pair of chamfered beams. The first bay has been partitioned to create a very narrow dairy at the front (north side) and a service room or parlour at the rear, also featuring a pair of large chamfered beams. The roof has purlins made from reused timbers.

The attached garden wall encloses the north and east sides of the front garden. It is constructed of red brick in English garden wall bond with sandstone coping, standing approximately 1 meter high. The side wall ramps down to the front corner, and there is a gateway aligned with the porch, featuring rusticated stone jambs. The farmhouse forms a group with an associated wash-house located about 3 meters from the rear left corner and a farm building approximately 50 meters to the north.
