Description
Nos. 492 and 494 on Market Street are two cottages, dated 1794 above the door of No. 492, which have been combined into one club, the Whitworth Vale and Healey Band Club. The building is constructed from thin sandstone rubble with a watershot course, and it is colour washed. There is a vertical joint between the two cottages, and they have a slate roof with a ridge chimney stack at the junction. The plan is double-depth, with each cottage being one bay and two storeys high. The doorways are located to the right and have plain surrounds. No. 492 features one stepped triple-light window on each floor, while No. 494 has similar windows, although the ground floor window now has a flat head. All windows are fitted with glazing bars, creating four panes in the side lights and two leaves in the centre. Above the door of No. 492, there is a rectangular datestone inscribed with "M . A M 1794."
