WHITWORTH TONG END Nos. 29 and 30

(Formerly listed as Nos. 28 and 30, TONG LANE)

GV II Farmhouse, dated 1721 on lintel of porch, extended and altered as two dwellings, renovation in progress (1984). Coursed thin sandstone rubble, stone slate roof.

Single-depth three-bay plan with added porch to front of second and third bays, fourth bay added at left end. Two storeys, built with back to road; continuous dripcourse; large single storey gabled porch has doorway in right side with lintel inscribed I S: 1721; left of porch are mullion windows (recessed) on both floors, two square lights to first bay, three lights to second bay, the latter with narrow centre lights. First bay has inserted plain doorway. Added bay to left, later, has altered windows on both floors. Right return wall has recessed two-light window with hoodmould at first floor; rear is blind.

Interior: Original first bay has large crudely-chamfered beams (one with housings from previous use as cruck-blade), stop-chamfered joists; second bay has similar beams, undecorated joists, and quarter-turn stone stairs at rear wall; added bay has C19 iron fireplace with decorated surround, old oven-and-boiler kitchen range.
