Description
29 and 30 Tong End is a farmhouse dated 1721, as noted on the lintel of the porch. It has been extended and altered into two dwellings, with renovation work ongoing since 1984. The building is constructed from coursed thin sandstone rubble and features a stone slate roof.
The farmhouse has a single-depth three-bay plan, with a porch added to the front of the second and third bays, and a fourth bay added to the left end. It stands two storeys tall, with its back facing the road. There is a continuous dripcourse, and a large single-storey gabled porch that includes a doorway on the right side, inscribed with "I S: 1721". To the left of the porch, there are recessed mullion windows on both floors: two square lights in the first bay and three lights in the second bay, the latter featuring narrow centre lights. The first bay has an inserted plain doorway, while the added bay to the left has altered windows on both floors. The right return wall has a recessed two-light window with a hoodmould at the first floor, and the rear wall is blind.
Inside, the original first bay contains large crudely-chamfered beams, one of which has housings from its previous use as a cruck-blade, along with stop-chamfered joists. The second bay features similar beams, undecorated joists, and a quarter-turn stone staircase at the rear wall. The added bay includes a 19th-century iron fireplace with a decorated surround and an old oven-and-boiler kitchen range.
