Description
The Church of St John Evangelist, built in 1871 by Medland and Henry Taylor, is a Grade II listed building located off Market Street in Facit, Whitworth. Constructed from rock-faced sandstone with a slate roof featuring bands of pink slates, it showcases High Victorian Gothic architecture.
The church includes a nave, a south-west tower, and a chancel with side offices. The four-stage tower has angle-buttresses and a cylindrical stair turret with a conical top at the third stage. It features a triple-chamfered arched doorway on the south side and lancet windows at the second and third stages. The belfry is set back and panelled, with two deeply-chamfered louvres on each side, topped by a high embattled parapet with corner pinnacles.
The west front is characterized by a gabled and pinnacled surround to two arched doorways within a single arch, flanked by plate tracery rose windows with relieving arches. There is also a lettered frieze and a large tripartite west window with plate tracery. The buttressed four-bay nave features two gabled two-light windows and two lancets. The organ house has two quatrefoils, while the chancel includes a lancet and a large five-light plate-traceried east window.
Inside, the church boasts an arch-braced hammerbeam king-post roof with curved struts spanning the nave. The chancel is adorned with carved wood reredos and panelling, while the rest of the interior remains very simple.
