Description
Nos. 535A and 535B on Market Street are a block of four small back-to-back cottages, likely built in the late 18th century, which have been modified to create two through-cottages. The exterior features watershot coursed sandstone and a slate roof with a ridge chimney and a gable chimney. The building has a double-depth plan with two bays and stands two storeys high, with its gable facing the road. It is set back behind a modern shop attached to the right gable. The front has two doorways with plain surrounds and two stepped triple-light windows on each floor. The left end of both the front and rear walls shows tusking for an intended continuation, while the left return wall has two small windows and a joint mark from a recently-demolished two-privy lean-to. The rear of the building has two doorways without surrounds, three flush mullion windows with unequal lights on the ground floor, and on the first floor, there is a four-light window (with two middle lights blocked) and a three-light window. Inside, the layout has been altered to create a connecting doorway through the axial partition; there is a staircase in the front room and evidence of a former staircase in the back room.
