Description

Foulds House Farmhouse is a farmhouse dated 1677, located off Sabden Road in Simonstone. It is constructed from coursed sandstone blocks and rubble, featuring quoins and a stone slate roof with moulded coping and kneelers at the left gable. The building has a large external chimney stack on the same gable and a gable chimney at the right end. The farmhouse consists of two bays, with the second bay possibly being a later addition, and has a projecting porch in the center, along with a short rear extension to the second bay that incorporates a staircase.

The farmhouse is two storeys high, and the two-storey porch features kneelers and a wide chamfered doorway, with the lintel undercut on the inner side to create a shallow Tudor arch. Above the doorway, there is a 2-light double-chamfered window with a hoodmould at the first floor, and beneath this is a recessed datestone with a moulded surround and raised lettering reading "HW:IW ; AN:1677" on the left side. The first bay has a similar window on each floor, divided by king mullions into 3 + 3 and 4 + 2 lights respectively. The gable end of this part has a large external chimney with offsets, and to the rear of this is a square recessed 2-light window that lacks the mullion, along with a round-headed light that has been lengthened downwards.

The bay to the right of the porch appears to have been added or altered, constructed from less regular masonry, and has three inserted windows. In the angle with the porch, there is a doorway that incorporates old jambstones and a lintel with a crude dog-toothing pattern incised. Inside, the first bay features beams with cyma-stopped small chamfers, supported on stone corbels, and there is a large stone arched fireplace that is now concealed.
