Description

Copthurst Farmhouse and Cottage is a farmhouse that likely dates from the late 17th century, although some parts may be older. It is constructed from coursed sandstone blocks with quoins and features a stone slate roof. The building has a chimney on the left gable and another on the ridge at the junction of the second and third bays.

The farmhouse has a three-bay plan and a rear outshut stair turret located in the middle bay, with a continuous outshut extending to the gable end of the third bay. It is two storeys high. The south front includes a plain doorway inserted into the second bay, with quoins visible at the first floor of the first bay. There are three windows on the ground floor and four above, all featuring chamfered surrounds, deeply recessed ovolo-moulded mullions (now with chamfered render), and hollow-moulded hoodmoulds. The ground floor windows consist of five, six, and four lights, while the first floor has four, three, three, and four lights.

On the left gable, there is hollow-moulded coping and an inserted window, while the right gable has an inserted door, two inserted windows, and a blocked two-light attic window. At the rear, the first bay has quoins at the inner corner (partly obscured by the stair turret), an inserted door, and a small blocked lancet window at the first floor.

Inside, the first bay, likely the oldest part of the house, features beams and joists with cyma-stopped chamfers, and a small fireplace above with a Tudor-arched chamfered surround. The second bay contains two very long and straight beams with cyma-stopped small chamfers.
