Description
Layton Ghyll is a farmhouse, now a house, dating from the late 17th century, with alterations and enlargements likely made in the 19th century. It is constructed of coursed squared sandstone with quoins and features a stone slate roof. The building has a double-depth four-room plan, with a former rear outshut raised to create a two-storey rear range under a parallel ridge.
The house has two storeys and five bays, arranged symmetrically. The central doorway is framed by a simple architrave with a raised outer rim. There are four windows on the ground floor and five above, all with similar surrounds. These windows were probably originally cross-windows, as indicated by marks of former transoms visible in the jambs. The ground floor windows on the left are now twelve-pane sashes, while those on the right have been altered into lengthened cross-windows. The first-floor windows are all casements. The building features gable chimneys and gable coping with kneelers. The right return wall includes a double-chamfered mullioned window in the rear room at ground floor, which was originally a four-light window but now lacks the first and third mullions.
Inside, a lateral partition has been inserted in the left front room to create a central passage that leads to a dog-leg staircase. This staircase has a closed string, turned balusters, a broad handrail, and square newels. In the front right-hand room, there is a chamfered beam and chamfered joists with run-out stops.
