Description
Hawkslyn is a farmhouse, now a house, dating from the late 17th century and remodelled in the 18th century, with some alterations. It is constructed of coursed squared sandstone and has a roof made of stone-coloured composition tiles. The building features a two-unit plan with a continuous rear outshut beneath a catslide roof, and there is an added wing set back at the left end.
The structure is two storeys high. The main range has three first-floor windows and a drip moulding above them. The doorway is offset to the left of centre and has a plain lintel. The windows have similar surrounds and mullions. On the ground floor, there are large windows on either side of the door, which may have originally had mullions but now feature cross-window casements. At the right end, there is a single-light window. On the first floor, there are two 2-light windows and a similar single-light window at the right end. The single-bay wing to the left has similar windows. The building has chimneys on the principal gables and the gable of the wing. The right-hand return wall includes a former doorway that has been altered into a window, and a very tall doorway leading to the outshut, which is said to have been an entrance for a horse. The rear of the building is less interesting but features a chimney on the slope of the roof at the junction with the outshut.
Inside, there are two 17th-century chamfered beams in the left room, and a similar beam in the right-hand room with a scarf joint suggesting a former firehood bressumer. The interior also includes a large king-post roof truss with V-struts and many large taper marks in the tie-beam. In the outshut, there is the lower part of a flight of stone steps that were formerly the external access to the rear upper room.
Historically, Hawkslyn is said to have been a coaching inn, with stables located on the opposite side of the road.
