Description
Mullion Cottage, Squirrel Cottage, and Wayside is a farmhouse that has been converted into three dwellings. It dates from the late 17th century and has been altered over time. The building is constructed of coursed squared sandstone with quoins and features a stone slate roof. It has a rectangular three-unit lobby-entry plan and stands two storeys high.
The exterior includes a continuous dripmould, which is interrupted at the right-hand end. The doorway at the junction of the second and third units has a moulded surround and a shaped lintel with a carved fan or scallop in the center. To the left of the doorway, there are two five-light windows on each floor, featuring recessed chamfered mullions, with the middle window at ground floor recently restored. Above the door, there is a two-light window that lacks the mullion. To the right, there is a five-light window missing the first and third mullions, an inserted door next to it, a two-light window above, and another inserted window next to that.
The building has a chimney on the ridge aligned with the door and another at the left gable. The gable copings have kneelers. The left gable wall features an inserted door under a hoodmould where a former window was located, and a two-light window above it, also with a hoodmould. The rear of the building includes, among other features, a two-light window at the left end of the ground floor, four similar windows at the first floor, and a three-light window in line with the chimney.
Inside, the center unit (No. 2, Squirrel Cottage) has two large chamfered beams and a restored arched fireplace with a moulded surround. The right-hand end (Wayside) contains a blocked round-headed window with a saddle-bar still in place in the gable wall, although this end is now covered by an adjoining building.
