Description

Hawksworth Cottage is a farmhouse that has been converted into a house. It dates back to the 17th century and retains some internal features from an earlier building, although it has been altered and enlarged in the 20th century. The structure is made of coursed squared sandstone with quoins and has a stone slate roof. It follows a three-unit lobby-entry plan and is one and a half storeys high, excluding a modern addition at the rear.

The front features a doorway at the junction of the first and second bays, which has an ogee-shaped lintel and plain jambs. There are two restored four-light mullioned windows on each floor and a single-light window above the door. The third bay contains 18th-century three-light windows on both floors, featuring flat-faced flush mullions and plain surrounds. All windows have moulded sills. A ridge chimney is aligned with the door, and there is another chimney at the right-hand gable. The left return wall showcases a 17th-century recessed four-light window with cavetto mullions. The rear of the building is of less interest.

Inside, there are remains of the former timber-framed structure, including one wall post with arch-bracing to a wall plate that has large blocked mortices in the soffit, likely from the original rear wall. There are also back-to-back Tudor-arched stone fireplaces and chamfered beams that support joists with unusually deep chamfers.
