Description

The Church of St Peter is a Grade II listed building located in Rawdon, Aireborough. The tower is dated 1706, although it may be older, while the rest of the church dates from the late 19th century. It is constructed of coursed squared sandstone for the tower and punched dressed blocks, topped with a stone slate roof. The church features a west tower, a nave with a south aisle, and a chancel.

The tower is square and unbuttressed, consisting of three stages. It has a chamfered plinth and a large two-centred arched doorway on the south side, which is deeply chamfered and features a square-headed plank door. Above the doorway is a datestone with the raised lettering "TL 1706." The second stage includes a narrow rectangular window, while a large clockface is positioned above it. The set-back third stage has a two-centred-arched double-chamfered belfry window with two cusped louvred lights, a hoodmould, a drip-mould with two gargoyles, and an embattled parapet that conceals a low pyramidal roof topped with a weathervane. The west side of the tower has two recessed round-headed windows with hollow spandrels and chamfered square-headed surrounds, but is otherwise similar to the south side.

The full-height four-bay aisle is buttressed and features four cross-gables, each containing two-centred-arched windows with two cusped lights and multifoils in the heads. The north side of the nave has similar windows. The chancel includes a three-light east window with two quatrefoils and a trefoil in the head.

Inside, the church features an aisle arcade supported by cylindrical columns with foliated caps and double-chamfered arches, along with a scissor-braced roof.
