Description

Rawdon Free School, now a house, was built in the early to mid-18th century and subsequently altered. Constructed of dressed sandstone with a stone slate roof, the building has a double-depth plan and a short outshut at the rear of the right-hand end. It is two storeys high and arranged symmetrically over three bays. Features include rusticated quoins, a moulded plinth, and a first-floor drip mould. The wide central doorway is now partially filled with modern common brick. The ground floor has two windows, each with coupled lights, raised sills, plain lintels, and altered glazing. The first floor has three square windows, all with raised surrounds; the central window features a blank panel framed by vertical strips, and all are now 2-light casements. Gable copings incorporate kneelers. The left-hand gable wall has external steps leading to the first floor, incorporating a porch with a Tuscan column at the corner and a protective parapet over the steps, with a chamfered doorway at first floor level. The right-hand gable wall features three ground floor windows and one above, all with raised surrounds. The rear elevation retains rusticated quoins similar to those at the front, as well as a rear wall chimney. Marks indicating former additions, now removed, are visible on both the front and rear elevations.
