Description
Red Lee Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates back to the early 17th century. It is constructed from coursed sandstone rubble with quoins and features a stone slate roof with gable chimneys. The building currently has two bays but was originally designed as a baffle-entry and may have had three bays arranged in a U-plan.
The farmhouse is two storeys high. The first bay projects slightly and has a plain doorway along with two square windows. The second bay features a very large blocked doorway with a chamfered surround near the angle with the shippon, and to the left, there is a 4-light double-chamfered stone mullion window that was originally five lights. Both of these windows have unusually large hollow-moulded hoodmoulds. On the first floor, there is a similar 5-light window without a hoodmould, as well as a very small chamfered window above the doorway.
To the right of the farmhouse, the lean-to shippon projects like the first bay and retains the remains of an old window, possibly with four or five lights, along with an inserted door, suggesting it may have once been a right wing. The left return wall includes a 4-light window on the first floor.
At the rear, where the bays meet, there is an outshut resembling a stair turret, with the roof extending over it. This outshut has remains of a 2-light window, while the second bay features a 2-light fire window and a 3-light window at ground level, with a 4-light window above. To the right, there is a 4-light window that is missing one mullion.
Inside, the farmhouse has beams with tongue-stopped quarter-round moulding, and in the end wall of the second bay, there is a very large stone arched fireplace that is now blocked and covered.
