Description

Lodge Farmhouse and its integral barn is a farmhouse likely built in the 17th century, with additions from the 18th and 19th centuries on the left side. The structure is made of coursed sandstone rubble with large quoins, while the later additions feature watershot coursed sandstone and random rubble. The roofs are at three slightly different levels, covered with slate and stone slate, and there are three chimneys.

The original building consists of four bays, with domestic accommodation located only in the first bay, which originally had an end baffle-entry. This part is now two low storeys and has a modern lean-to porch that covers an altered original doorway or window, along with a square window on the first floor. The three-bay barn extends to the right and features small breathers on two levels, blocked wagon entrances in the centre, and a doorway at the right end with very large jambstones and a lintel, topped with a straight dripstone. The rear wall has a similar doorway and moulded double corbels that once supported a canopy for the wagon entrance.

The later additions on the left are each double pile, one bay, and two storeys high with roofs of different pitches, with the first addition partly embracing the original house. Inside, most of the interior has been altered, likely in the 18th century, but the original rear doorway to the domestic part remains, although it is now covered by a later kitchen extension. The barn still has original collar rafter roof trusses, with tie-beams featuring tongue-stopped chamfers. There is a blocked doorway to the house part, and cow stalls in the end bay facing inwards include at least two posts with tongue-stopped chamfers. At the time of the survey, internal renovations of the house were in progress. This building is listed as a rare example of a very simple type of laithe house.
