Description
Higham War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921, with additions for the Second World War. It is situated in the churchyard south of the Grade II-listed Parish Church of St John the Evangelist and near the Grade II-listed School Adjacent to St John’s Church.
The memorial is made of Bolton Abbey stone and features a tall cross fleurée with a tapering shaft that rises from a three-stepped base. The south face of the cross and the upper part of the shaft are decorated with a carved interlacing foliate design, and all lettering is incised.
The main inscription is located on the south face of the upper step of the base, stating, "IN PROUD AND LOVING MEMORY OF/ THE MEN FROM THIS VILLAGE WHO/ GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE/ GREAT WAR. 1914 – 1919." Below this, the names of the nine men who died are listed across the four faces of the middle step of the base. A second inscription on the south face of the bottom step reads, "MAKE THEM TO BE NUMBERED WITH THY SAINTS IN GLORY EVERLASTING."
The dedication for the Second World War is found on the south face of the shaft, below the carved decoration, and reads, "1939 – 1945/ (5 NAMES)."
The memorial stands on a raised stone platform, with small square stone posts abutting the lower step of the base on the east and west sides.
