Description

Hope Cottage is a house dating from the late 17th century that has been altered over time. It is constructed from sandstone rubble and features a slate roof. The building is two storeys high, with the earliest part consisting of two bays. The left-hand first-floor window and the right-hand ground-floor window have rebated and chamfered surrounds, although the mullions have been removed. The other windows have plain reveals. There is a blocked one-light fire window on the right side. The door, located next to the left-hand window, has a rendered surround.

To the left of the main structure is a one-bay addition that includes windows with plain stone surrounds. To the right, there is a ground-floor window with plain reveals situated within a blocked doorway. The house features chimneys on the gables and to the left of the original house. The right-hand gable wall has a blocked first-floor fireplace that belonged to a cottage which once adjoined but has since been demolished.

At the rear, there is a stair outshut that slightly projects. To the left of this is a window within a blocked doorway, and to the right is a door with a plain stone surround. On the first floor, there is a window with a rebated and chamfered surround. Inside, the house has exposed main ceiling joists, including what appears to be a firehood bressumer, and a fireplace with a plain stone surround.
