Description

Two houses, dating from 1694 with likely alterations in the 18th century, are constructed from sandstone rubble with a stone slate roof. They are two storeys with an attic. Number 72, on the right, has a drip course and is arranged with three bays. This house features rebated and chamfered windows, most of the mullions having been removed. The outer bays on the ground floor retain a single central mullion in each window. A fire window of two lights, featuring a flat-faced mullion, was moved from the rear of the house during 20th-century alterations. The door, located in the central bay, has a moulded surround and a lintel inscribed 'TWM 1694'. End chimneys are present. Number 71 adjoins the left-hand side and was altered in the early 20th century; older photographs show a first-floor doorway. It is arranged with two bays and has windows with plain reveals. The door, positioned between the bays, also has plain reveals. A re-set moulded lintel inscribed 'CW 1704' sits above its lintel. A left-hand gable chimney is present. Inside number 72, a firehood bressumer with a heck post and a shouldered 18th-century stone fireplace are notable. The right-hand room contains a bolection-moulded stone parlour fireplace. Number 71 is included in the listing primarily for group value.
