Description
16, 18 and 20 New Street are houses and an attached warehouse, now functioning as shops. They were built in the mid-18th century and altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. The buildings are constructed of coursed, roughly squared sandstone with ashlar dressings and have slate roofs. The warehouse on the right was originally four storeys high and features projecting quoins. The ground floor has a mid-20th century shop front with a timber fascia and pilasters, along with a recessed steel bow window and a separate entrance door to the left. There is a central loading slot, which has projecting quoins and stone corbels at the second and third floor levels, now filled with steel-framed glazing in small panes. To the right, there are two narrower staircase windows with stone surrounds, positioned one above the other on the first and second floors. The two former houses on the left have double-depth plans, each with a rear wing to the left, and are three storeys tall. The ground floors feature late 19th century shop fronts with recessed doorways. The upper windows have painted stone surrounds. No. 18 has three sashes without glazing bars on the first floor and sashes with glazing bars on the second floor. No. 20 has 20th century joinery on the first floor and Victorian four-pane sashes on the second floor.
