Description
No. 23 New Street is a house that has been converted into a shop. It was built around 1800 and has undergone alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of squared coursed sandstone, and its roof, originally covered with slates, has been partly replaced with corrugated sheeting. The structure has three storeys and three bays. The ground floor features a timber shop front from around 1900, which includes carved brackets on either side of the fascia. The upper windows are sashed without glazing bars and are set in painted stone surrounds. The chamfered quoins on the right side were likely added in the mid or late 19th century, coinciding with the construction of what is now the rear wing of the City Museum.
