Description
No. 48 Call Lane is a house and warehouse, now functioning as a shop. The house dates from the mid-18th century, while the warehouse was likely built later. The building is constructed of rendered brick with a slate roof and has three storeys. The street-facing side features four first-floor windows and quoins, while the warehouse extends to the rear, which has seven first-floor openings.
The main facade facing the street has four-pane sash windows set in keyed architraves with sill bands. The upper-floor window heads have been altered, and the quoins stop at the same line, indicating that the eaves and roof have been rebuilt. The ground floor has been modified for a 20th-century shop. On the left side of the building, there are two tiers of loading doors that have been changed to windows, featuring segmental heads and 20th-century frames.
Inside, there are no surviving 18th-century details except for the original back wall of the house, which was modified when the rear range was added. There is some evidence of end fireplaces. A vaulted cellar extends beneath the entire building, with doorways and ramps leading up to the entrances on Queen's Court.
