Description

9 and 11 Duncan Street is a shop and office building constructed in 1905, with alterations made in the 20th century. Designed by H.A. Chapman, it features a faience exterior and a slate roof in the Baroque Revival style. The building stands four storeys tall on a corner site, showcasing two gabled bays on the main facade, a rounded corner bay topped with a turret, and a wide gabled bay flanked by narrower bays on the left side.

On the ground floor, there is a later 20th-century shop facade that follows the original divisions. The first and second floors are adorned with canted bay windows supported by pilasters, along with narrow single-light windows set within rusticated architraves. A heavy modillion cornice runs above the second floor. The third floor features large semicircular attic windows with balconies, set within rusticated arches, and two panelled gables above that have small pediments at their apexes.

On the left return, the cornice continues, and there are tall stone mullion windows beneath a wide gable. The corner tower includes two oval windows high on the second floor, framed by architraves with swags, and the turret displays banded rustication on the window pilasters, along with consoles, a cornice, and a dome. The interior has not been inspected.
