Description

11, 12 and 13 Hirst's Yard are workshops built in the early 19th century, with alterations made in the late 19th century. They are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and feature a slate roof with a brick stack on the left side. The buildings are two storeys high, with the taller range on the left having three windows and a loading door equipped with a cast-iron hoist. To the right is a slightly projecting block with a lower roof line and two windows. There is a narrow inserted doorway with an overlight and a loading door to the left. The windows have cambered arches, small pane side-sliding sashes, and shutters on the ground floor. The basement walling has undergone considerable rebuilding below the ground-floor window sill level, with two arched openings visible. The left return shows a straight join, indicating either rebuilding of the frontage or the use of higher quality bricks.

The interior has not been inspected. This building is a rare example of the type of warehousing and workshops that were constructed within yards behind the significant market street frontage of Briggate during the 18th and 19th centuries. The area was extensively altered in the late 19th century when Duncan Street was created as an extension to Boar Lane, designed by Thomas Ambler.
