Description
The south boundary wall to Fairlawn and its west continuation to Fosbrooke House is a mid to late 19th-century structure that forms a boundary between various private gardens and a public footpath along the beach. The wall, which includes a return along the east side of Fairlawn, is approximately 330 metres long, extending from Fairlawn Road to the junction with the garden wall of Fosbrooke House. It stands about 2 metres high, gradually decreasing in height towards the east.
The wall is constructed of coursed cobblestone, with the western half now mostly covered in vegetation. It features lacings of handmade brick and sandstone copings. Notable elements include a one-course brick band at about half height, brick lozenges below this band, and widely-spaced brick strips above, except in the eastern half. There are various gateways, including two in a Tudor-arched style with gabled parapets, while the others have been altered. This wall forms a group with the summerhouse located in the southwest corner of the Fairlawn garden.
