Description
The wall enclosing the garden of West Farleigh Hall is likely from the early 18th century. It is constructed of red and grey brick on a coursed ragstone base and surrounds the garden on almost all sides. The north end of the west boundary wall features red and grey brick in a Flemish-type bond, standing about 9 feet high and extending approximately 85 feet from the north-west corner to the first gatepier. It also returns from the north-west corner to form the north boundary of the garden.
There is a gateway to the north of the center of the west wall, which has rectangular piers that the wall ramps down to, complete with a moulded cornice and ball finials. Wooden gates ramp up to the piers at the ends. The central section of the west wall is about 4 feet high, made of coursed ragstone, with a red and grey brick parapet, extending about 90 feet between the gateways, opposite the house.
A gateway to the south of the center of the west wall is similar to the north-central gateway. Beyond this, the stone wall continues about 60 feet south-south-east to a gateway leading to the former stable yard, which matches the other gateways. After this point, the wall increases in height, featuring chequered red and grey brick above a galleted stone base, continuing about 225 feet south-east along Ewell Lane, before reducing to the height of the stone base for an additional 55 feet.
