Description

The boundary walls surrounding the churchyard of St Cuthbert and along the southern side of the Victory/Parish Hall are believed to date from 1834-5 to about 1840, with 19th and 20th-century extensions to the west, north, and east churchyard walls.

The southern section of the churchyard's western boundary wall is approximately 1.5 meters high and constructed of cobbles, featuring a chamfered stone coping. The rest of the western wall, the churchyard's north wall, and the northern half of the eastern wall are made of brick in two phases. The first phase has a rounded stone coping, while the later phase has a flat stone coping. A small section of crenellated brick wall near the midpoint of the eastern wall separates the later brick wall from the earlier cobble wall, which is about 1 meter high and also has a chamfered stone coping. The southern wall of the churchyard is made of brick, approximately 1 meter high, and features a chamfered stone coping. At both ends of this wall, where it meets the cobble walls, there are stone terminal piers that sit atop the brick wall. These piers are square in shape, have chamfered edges, gables on each face, and a central inlaid moulded panel on the southern face. A modern timber lychgate provides access to the churchyard from the south.

The western part of the southern boundary wall of the Victory/Parish Hall matches the height of the adjacent southern boundary wall of the churchyard. It is constructed of cobbles and has a chamfered stone coping. The gate piers flanking two entrance drives are made of brick on stone plinths, featuring a stone band at three-quarters height, and are topped with stone copings shaped to form gables on all four sides. To the east of the eastern gate pier, the cobble wall rises to about 1.5 meters high and is topped with a chamfered stone coping.
