Description
The summerhouse, or gazebo, is located in the south boundary wall of the garden of Fairlawn in Lytham St Annes. It dates from the mid to late 19th century and is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, featuring sandstone dressings and a fishscale slate roof. The structure has an octagonal plan set on a square plinth with weathered corners and is a single storey beneath a tall pyramidal roof.
The north front, which faces the garden, includes a Tudor-arched doorway that is accessed by three stone steps with side walls. The other sides of the summerhouse have sashed windows without glazing bars, all surrounded by chamfered stone. The windows on the outer sides are protected by mesh covers. A cavetto-moulded stone cornice with carved ornament is inset at each corner, and the oversailing eaves lead to a tall, steeply-pitched roof topped with an apex weathervane. This summerhouse is a prominent feature of the sea-front landscape and is part of a group with the attached boundary wall.
