38 And 38A, Drinkhouse Road

Nos. 38 and 38A on Drinkhouse Road is a house from the early 19th century that was modified around 1930 to create two separate dwellings. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, featuring yellow headers in parts that have been repaired. The building has a tiled roof with a rebuilt chimney located at the left gable, just in front of the ridge. The layout is double-depth, with each dwelling now consisting of one bay.

The house stands two storeys high and is almost symmetrical. In the centre, there are paired doorways with panelled doors, semi-circular fanlights that have traceries, and linked Tuscan architraves supported by engaged columns. These architraves feature fluted entablatures and dentilled open pediments; the left door is believed to be original, while the right is an alteration. No. 38 has a 16-pane sashed window with a splayed stone head on each floor, while No. 38A has matching windows, although the lower window has been repaired and is now a top-hung casement with 16 panes. Above the door to No. 38, there is a blind window decorated with a rhombus. The left gable wall features a tall stairlight in the centre with altered glazing, and to the rear of this, there is a 24-pane sliding sash window on the first floor and another in the attic. The interior has also been altered.
