Description

The school located in the churchyard of the Church of St. Michael was rebuilt in 1827. It is constructed from squared sandstone and has slate roofs. The building is divided into three parts, creating a canted enclosure on the south side of the churchyard. The main block is a two-storey structure with three bays, built over a pathway leading to a bridge. To the left is a canted single-storey wing, and to the right is a lower two-storey continuation with four bays. The design is in the Tudor style.

The symmetrical main block features a central passage with a two-centred archway, which is surrounded by a square hoodmould adorned with carved quatrefoils in the spandrels. There are three-light mullioned windows on either side of the archway, as well as similar windows with three, two, and three lights on the first floor. The roof is steeply pitched, and there is a large external chimney on the left gable with clustered flues, along with a smaller chimney on the right gable featuring coupled flues.

The single-storey canted wing on the left has a mullioned window with a hoodmould. The two-storey extension on the right has four square windows with hoodmoulds on each floor, all of which have altered glazing. In the centre of the first floor, there are two datestones, one above the other, which read: "IAMES HIET VICAR AND:RE CTOR 1660" and "THIS SCHOOL WAS REBUILT BY SUBSCRIPTION A.D. MDCCCXXVII."

The rear of the building has an archway that matches the one at the front, with wings flanking the bays. The first bay is canted, and there is a continuous dripcourse with an arched doorway leading into each wing.
