Description

No 38 and 38A at Blacksmiths Corner is a house that has been divided into two properties. It likely dates from the early to mid-16th century, with later alterations. The building is timber framed, featuring a rendered first floor and a ground floor clad in Flemish bond brick, with a shallow brick plinth. It has a plaintile roof and a rendered transverse-axial stack, along with a left-hand external brick stack. The structure is 1½ storeys tall and has a three-cell cross passage plan, with the left-hand parlour cell being a later addition.

The façade includes two three-light casements, with the left window having six panes and the central cell featuring three plain lights. There is a boarded door with a glazed panel located in the cross passage, a small two-light casement to the right in the service cell, and a single light window to the far left. Above the central window, there is a three-light six-pane full dormer casement.

Inside, part of the frame is exposed, and there is a chimney to the left of the passage. The interior retains an intact pair of service rooms, each with rectangular service doorways that have chamfered reveals. The doors are likely original, with the rear door made of three butted planks and the front door made of three lapped boards, both featuring large pintle hinges. The hall has an inserted ceiling with crude ogee stops on the axial beam and thin joists, while the right-hand tie beam has been partially cut through. Stairs are located at the rear of the hall, and the roof features a two-tier staggered purlin design. No 38, on the left, appears to be a later addition, with thinner scantling visible. The interior has not been inspected.
