Description
Nos 25 and 26 on Chapel Lane is a house that has been divided into two parts and is said to have originally been an inn. It dates from the 16th century and has undergone later alterations. The building is timber framed, with a rendered exterior and a brick wing at the rear. It features plaintile roofs, including a long hip and gablet to the right over an extended bay. The structure is two storeys high and follows a three-cell lobby entry plan, although it was originally two cells. A central rear wing forms a T shape.
The front of the building has a pair of boarded doors located below the stack, with a two-light small paned timber casement to the left and a two-light timber casement to the right. There are two small openings on the first floor, one for the stairs in front of the stack and one in the right bay. The large axial stack has two diagonally set square shafts and has been partly rebuilt, likely as an insertion. There are also two-light dormer casements on the rear, positioned to the left and right of the central wing.
The two-storey brick wing features various casements and has a cross axial brick stack set back from the gable. Inside No 26 (the left side), there is a single cell with some exposed close-studded framing. It has a chamfered axial beam without stops, and the stairs in front of the stack have a rounded newel with original treads and risers. The roof has side purlins with renewed rafters, and there is a cellar.
No 25 (the right side) has been restored and consists of two cells, with the right cell being a later addition made of thinner scantling. The former closed truss is now a partition wall with a middle rail, and there is a partly jowled storey post. The main room has chamfered beams and horizontal joists. The stack has been largely rebuilt, and the stairs are located at the front of the end bay. The roof is enclosed, but externally, two layers of rafter feet are exposed.
