Description
The barn at Belstead Hall dates from around 1600 and later. It features an originally close studded timber frame that is partly encased in or underpinned with brick, including some in English bond and some in 19th-century Flemish bond. The structure has some weatherboarding, a brick nogged south gable, and a plaintile roof. There is also a later timber framed and weatherboarded lean-to with pantile roofs. The barn is two to three storeys high and incorporates stables, living quarters, and lofts.
The east face of the barn has varied openings, including four sets of stable and barn doors, as well as three first-floor openings with strap hinges and boarded doors. The south gable features horizontal brick nogging and decorative braces above the bressumer. There is a timber latticed window with a shaped head in the apex below the collar.
Inside, at either end, there are heavy bridging beams with bar stops and flat joists, along with wooden mangers at the south end. In the middle, there is a later floor to a two-storey hay loft, which is separated from the stable by a closed truss. The beams and bridging beams are supported by knees, some of which are natural Y-shaped timbers. The roof is a two-tier butt purlin design, with some cranked wind braces on both sides.
