Description
The Blacksmith's Shop, located at Blacksmith's Corner in Belstead, is an early 19th-century smithy. It is constructed of red brick, primarily in Flemish bond, with English bond used at the rear. The building features a plaintiled hipped roof with stacks positioned on the left and right sides, corresponding to the front and rear of the ridge. Originally a single cell, it has been converted into two cells and remains a single storey.
The exterior includes two boarded shuttered windows, one of which is in a part-blocked opening with a segmental head, along with a small blocked opening. A dentil eaves cornice adds decorative detail. On the left side, there is a boarded stable door, while the right side has a lean-to area used for travis or shoeing.
Inside, the smithy retains its original features, including two forges, an anvil, and all associated equipment. The roof has a spindly clasped purlin structure, which was partly replaced following a fire approximately 20 years ago.
