Description
38A West Street is a house dating from the early 19th century and possibly earlier. It features painted brickwork and a gabled roof covered with concrete pantiles, which connects to No. 38 and has a hipped section over the rear block. The house stands two storeys high with attics and includes a flat dormer with a modern three-light casement window.
On the exterior, the first floor has two flush double-hung sash windows with small panes, each set under segmental-arched heads made of rubbed brick. There is a projecting string band between the two storeys. The ground floor features one similar window and a doorcase that matches No. 38, complete with reeded architraves, square blocks at the corners, a flat hood, and a rectangular fanlight. The entrance has a recessed early 19th-century door with six panels, and there is a plinth with a moulded top and a stack at the northwest end.
Inside, the entrance passage has had part of the side wall removed, creating a semicircular arch with a keystone. The back wall reveals part of a 17th-century elm timber frame, which includes a substantial wall-post that is part of the structure shared with Nos. 38 and 39. The interior also features a tight dogleg staircase.
