Description

Trinity House Offices, dating from the early to mid-19th century, are located in West Street, Harwich. These offices were originally built as houses. The building is constructed of red Flemish-bond brickwork with decorative bands of darker brick at second-floor level, and the roof is concealed behind high parapets. It extends over three storeys, incorporating cellars.

The exterior features a projecting painted stone coved cornice resting on a corbel table, decorated with triangular arches and grotesque heads. The second floor has four recessed double-hung sash windows, each with one vertical glazing bar and triangular painted stone heads with chamfered edges. The first floor mirrors the second with similar windows but the stone heads have demi-hexagonal arches. The ground floor features two similar double-hung sash windows and a pair of linked doors, all united by a painted stone band at head level and incorporating demi-hexagonal heads. A pier between the doors is distinguished by a central groove and a circular motif above. Two flights of four steps lead to the recessed doors, which have moulded panels and rectangular fanlights. A rendered plinth is present, with two cast-iron inset bootscrapers.

The interior of the building was not inspected during the listing process. Attached cast-iron railings, featuring lozenge and circle designs, are a notable subsidiary feature.
