Description

This mid-19th century house, now used as offices, was built on a narrow plot between earlier buildings. It is constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with sandstone dressings and a slate roof. The building has a double-depth, single-fronted plan and extends over three storeys, including a basement, with three bays. The basement is faced in ashlar, and the building features a plain frieze and moulded cornice.

The entrance, located in the first bay, is sheltered by a porch with four Tuscan columns supported by panelled pedestals, topped with a plain frieze and moulded cornice. A flight of three steps leads to a round-headed doorway, incorporating impost bands and a fanlight with a moulded surround. A panelled ashlar wall continues to the right of the porch, protecting a deep basement well which includes a doorway and a 20-pane sash window. All windows have moulded architraves with corbels at the ends of the sills, and have been altered.

Inside, the entrance hall features an unusual screen on the inner side of the doorway, comprised of two Tuscan columns in antis. The front room has elaborate moulded plaster cornices, the ground-floor rooms have elaborate moulded plaster cornices and the first-floor front room boasts a very elaborate undercut plaster frieze and cornice, and a ceiling rose decorated with curled acanthus leaves. A large, open-well staircase has two turned balusters per tread and panelled newels, illuminated by a skylight with a painted panel at its centre.
