Description

A pair of town houses, probably built around 1832, with later alterations. The houses are constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with sandstone dressings and a slate roof. They have a double-depth plan; number 24 has a double-fronted design, while number 25 is single-fronted. Both houses have basements and attics, with 3 bays to number 24 and 2 bays to number 25. The basement is finished with ashlar, acting as a plinth, and the house has a sill band on the first floor, a plain frieze and a moulded cornice with a blocking course at the top.

The doorways, located in the second and fourth bays, are reached by four steps with nosings, and have doorcases featuring engaged Ionic columns and plain friezes, all topped with moulded cornices and blocking courses. The door jambs have impost details, and the doors are panelled, each with an elliptical fanlight above. The windows are sash windows without glazing bars, with raised sills and wedge lintels. Basement windows are set lower than ground level and have gratings over the wells. A large wooden dormer sits over the third bay of number 24. There is a ridge chimney and gable chimneys.

The return wall of number 25, facing Camden Place, has a window on each floor of the rear bay, including a cellar window, and an attic window. Continuing to the rear is a lower 2-storey, one-bay extension, which is architecturally integrated with numbers 1 to 4 Camden Place, with sash windows on both floors.

Inside number 24, the original service areas remain complete, including a fireplace, a washing boiler, a slopstone, and steps leading to the back yard, where a pump is located, dated 1832.
