Description

50, 50A, 51 and 51A on West Street are four flats that were originally two houses, built in the early 19th century. They are constructed from dark yellow Gault bricks arranged in header bond, with red brick detailing. The building has a low-pitched gabled roof made of machine-made clay plain tiles from the 20th century, which is set behind high parapets.

The exterior features three storeys and a basement, with a symmetrical front. There is a moulded brick cornice beneath the parapet, and the lower part of the façade is rendered. On the second floor, there are three flush square double-hung sash windows with small panes, separated by two blind windows that have segmental-arched brick heads. The first floor has three tripartite 20th-century double-hung sash windows with small panes, alternating with a tall blind window that has arched heads. The ground floor mirrors this arrangement but includes two entrance doors instead of the blind windows. These doors have semicircular rubbed brick arched heads supported by stone impost blocks and are topped with Adamesque fanlights, one of which is a replica. The doors feature six raised-and-fielded panels and are fixed in place, with reeded architraves and three stone steps leading up to them. A substantial brick chimney stack rises behind the northwest gable parapet. There is also a large 20th-century two-and-a-half to three-storey rear extension. The interior does not retain any original features.
