Description

31 and 32 West Street are two houses dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century. They are timber-framed and rendered, featuring a gabled roof covered with clay plain tiles. The buildings are two storeys high with attics and cellars.

The exterior has a symmetrical front, which includes a 20th-century flat-roofed dormer with a two-light casement window that has a cross pattern of glazing bars. The eaves are coved and moulded, supported by metal stays. On the first floor, there is a five-window range of double-hung sash windows with small panes and moulded surrounds. The ground floor features four smaller but similar windows and an open pedimented door case. This door case has reeded pilasters and a recessed door with six raised-and-fielded panels, accessed by three steps. Above the door is a reeded band and a semicircular fanlight with petal-like subdivisions. The door to No. 32 has a 20th-century pediment on brackets and an early 19th-century five-panel door.

At the rear, there is a three-storey stair tower topped with a hipped clay plain tile roof. Inside, the entrance passage features a semicircular rear arch with a keystone and panelled pilasters. There is a mid-18th-century dogleg staircase with barley-sugar balusters in the first flight, turned balusters at the first floor, and plain boarded panels leading up to the attic level.
