Description

The pair of houses at 29 and 31 Abbey Foregate date primarily from the early 18th century, although they incorporate a core from the 17th century or earlier. Originally timber-framed, they were encased in brick and subsequently refronted. The roof is covered with plain tiles. The building is two storeys and an attic, with a five-window front. The left-hand doorway is set within a moulded architrave featuring console brackets and an entablature, while the right-hand doorway has a simple four-panelled door with an overlight. A central arch provides access to a passageway. The ground floor has mullioned and transomed wood windows of two and three lights, while the central upper window is blind, flanked by two-light mullioned and transomed windows. All windows have segmentally-arched heads with keystones; those on the ground floor connect to aprons beneath the upper windows. A moulded string course runs above the first-floor windows. Two wide gables are present, each with a two-light casement window. There is an axial stack. The framing is exposed in the gable walls, with heavy square panelling in the lower wall. Timber of a lighter scantling above suggests a second phase of construction.
