Description
The Park Social Club, originally a house and later a hotel, dates back to the early 16th century but is largely from the late 17th century. It features painted brick and timber-framing with a plain tiled roof. The main range on the right side has two storeys and a five-window range on the east elevation, divided into bays by pilasters. There is a doorway with sidelights to the right and another to the left of center. The lower openings have heavy moulded brick segmentally-arched heads that are corbelled out, while the upper storey has three-light wood mullioned and transomed windows with flat-arched gauged brick heads. Simple moulded capitals of the pilasters continue as a string course beneath a wood modillion eaves cornice, leading to an overhanging roof with two hipped dormers. The elevation facing Abbey Foregate has two bays with similar detailing. The building features gable and axial stacks that have been renewed.
To the left of the Abbey Foregate elevation, there is a wide cross wing of earlier date, rendered over timber-frame, which includes a seven-light window, possibly from a former shop in the gable, a three-light mullioned and transomed window in the jettied upper storey, and a six-pane sash in the gable apex. There is also a doorway on the inner side of the wing, with a three-light window above. The relationship between the two sections of the building suggests that an earlier timber-framed structure on the site was partially rebuilt, leaving only the cross wing as part of the later 17th-century construction.
