Description

The Talbot Hotel is an inn with origins likely dating back to the 16th or 17th century, though it has undergone significant modifications in the 19th and 20th centuries. The front block is rendered over rubble with applied timber framing, while the back is constructed from limestone rubble, topped with plain tile roofs. The layout is complex, featuring an L-shaped plan with a short wing at the right end. In the late 19th century, a further extension was added to the left, and between two back extensions, there is a third projection that likely served as original service accommodation. This last section has been further extended to include a wing with five prominent dormer windows, which is not of special interest.

The front of the building is two storeys high. On the ground floor, there are four square 20th-century casements with some leading, while the first floor features six early 19th-century casements with two lights each. A part-glazed door is located between the first and second bays, and a centrally placed plank door likely leads to an original cross passage. The building has two brick gable stacks and one similar ridge stack off-centre to the left. The upper storey showcases applied timber framing, which is also present on the left return gable, where there is a 2-light casement above a 20th-century part-glazed door. The right return displays a plain gable with a niche and two low deep buttresses, leading to a half-hipped wing that has two storeys and an attic with various lights, including a small flat-roofed projection with a canopy over the rear entrance door.

The adjoining wing features two 19th-century 2-light casements on the first floor and a brick stack. Beyond the left gable of the front block, there is a late 19th-century house that has been incorporated into the hotel. This house is rendered, two storeys high, with two windows featuring 4-pane sashes, a 20th-century door on the left, and a canted bay with a hipped roof on the right. The interior of the ground floor has been completely modified in the 20th century, with the main entrance door being a wide plank design. Despite the extensive modifications, the building retains its overall form and plays an important role in the townscape.
