Description

The Mere War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921, with additions for the Second World War. It is situated in The Square at the center of the town, near several other Grade II listed buildings, including the Clock Tower to the west.

The memorial features a stone Latin cross with intricately carved square capped arms. Sculpted points extend at an angle from the center of the cross between the arms. The cross-head sits above a moulded collar on a tapering octagonal shaft, which has chamfered stops and a square base. This shaft rises from a chamfered square plinth, which has curved top corners, and is set on a four-stepped octagonal base.

The memorial includes inscriptions and names on plaques made of white stone with leaded lettering. The main inscription on a plaque on the east face of the plinth reads, "1914 – 1919/ THEIR NAME/ LIVETH FOR/ EVERMORE." The names of 48 local residents who died in the First World War are displayed on plaques on the other three faces of the plinth.

An additional inscription on a stone plaque on the east face of the uppermost step of the base reads, "1939 – 1945." The names of 12 parishioners who died during the Second World War are listed on plaques on the south-east and north-east faces of the uppermost step.

The memorial is surrounded by eight modern metal posts with a chain hung between each one.
