Description

The Corton War Memorial is a First World War memorial, dating from around 1920, with later additions commemorating the Second World War. It is constructed of stone. The memorial takes the form of a tall, tapering, stone Latin cross with plain terminals to the arms and a moulded collar at its base. The cross sits upon an octagonal plinth, itself rising from a three-stepped octagonal base, all set on a square platform. One face of the plinth is inscribed "IN HONOURED MEMORY". Two faces to the left of this inscription bear the years 1914-1918 followed by the names, ranks, and regiments of six men who died in the First World War, with the inscription "PASS FRIEND/ ALL'S WELL" extending across the adjacent faces. Two faces to the right of the central inscription list the years 1939-1945, followed by the names, ranks, and regiments of five casualties from the Second World War, with inscriptions continuing across the adjacent faces. The riser of the top step of the base is inscribed with the verse "HE ON A CROSS AND THEY IN CRUEL STRIFE / THEIR LIVES LAID DOWN THAT OTHERS MIGHT HAVE LIFE."
